Spicy Applesauce Cake

Ingredients

  • 2 cups applesauce
  • 1-1/2 cups sugar
  • 1/2 cup shortening
  • 2 large eggs, lightly beaten
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tablespoon baking cocoa
  • 1-1/2 teaspoons baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon each ground cinnamon, nutmeg, allspice and cloves
  • 1 cup raisins
  • 1/2 cup semisweet chocolate chips
  • 1/2 cup chopped walnuts
  • topping:
  • 1/2 cup semisweet chocolate chips
  • 1/2 cup chopped walnuts
  • 2 tablespoons brown sugar

Directions

  1. In a large bowl, beat the applesauce, sugar, shortening and eggs. Combine the flour, cocoa, baking soda, salt, cinnamon, nutmeg, allspice and cloves; gradually beat into applesauce mixture until blended. Stir in the raisins, chocolate chips and walnuts.
  2. Pour into a greased  13× 9-in baking_pan Combine topping ingredients and sprinkle over batter. Bake at 350° for 35-40 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean. Cool on a wire rack.
